How to Perform the Prayer

After the adhan and iqamah, which are highly recommended before prayer—and whose method was mentioned previously—we begin the following actions:

First

Intention (Niyyah)

This means intending to perform the prayer. We say:

“I perform the prayer of [Fajr (morning), Dhuhr (noon), Asr (afternoon), Maghrib (sunset), or Isha (night), according to the particular prayer], as an obligatory act, seeking nearness to Allah, the Exalted.”

It is not necessary to say the intention aloud; having the intention in one's heart is sufficient.

Second

Takbirat al-Ihram

This comes immediately after the intention and consists of saying:

"Allahu Akbar" (Allah is the Greatest).

It is recommended to raise the hands to the level of the ears when saying it, as shown

Third

Recitation

While standing, we recite Surat al-Hamd (Surat al-Fatihah) followed by another complete surah, as shown

Fourth

Bowing (Ruku‘)

After completing the recitation, we bow for Ruku‘ and say:

“Glory be to my Lord, the Almighty, and praise be to Him.”

as shown
